It’s tough to know where to start with this review. Should it be the wonderful Dutch owners Berber and Marcel? The beautiful site with large green private pitches? The awesome views? The delicious food? Or simply the clean facilities and the pool “with a view”? Well, how about all of these combining to make our 2 weeks break here the best ever! The minute we arrived after our long journey we found an instant connection to our hosts (Marcel and Berber) Dutch, French and English spoken fluently (and fantastic sense of humour) which for two Brits with limited French and zero Dutch, this was such a bonus. The site is one of the most picturesque we have ever stayed on, three terraces, each with beautiful views across the valley and lake, even after the extreme heat of August the site was green and full of life. Each pitch has its own unique charm, providing a sense of privacy with hedges which act like a continuation of the surroundings between pitches but also with the opportunity to chat with neighbours and make new friends if you want to. The cleanest facilities EVER, whatever time we used them, and we personally never had to queue for the showers, but it wouldn’t have been an issue anyway as you could sit and spend some more time admiring the view or chatting to other guests. M&B like to keep to minimal ‘rules’ taking a very relaxed approach expecting this will foster respect and thoughtfulness from their guests but rest assured if you need something to be rectified, they will always step in to sort things out, they want their guests to have the best experience possible. They have many years’ experiences of camping and use this to create the atmosphere they would like to have when on holiday themselves, and it works. The standard is high. A new swimming pool is available which is beautifully maintained with the environment in mind keeping chemicals to a minimum whilst ensuring it is enjoyable and safe for everyone. We understand there will be additions to the pool area over the coming seasons, can’t wait to come back and try these out too. We tried out the SUP boards for hire, this was so much fun, having watched the sons of a lovely Belgian couple racing around on them and Carolina doing yoga too!! We gave it a go. Without any pressure to do so, we joined in with two of the three ‘group’ evening meals on offer, where you all eat together at a large table and meet your fellow campers if this appeals to you, we gave it a go and what a great decision, we met so many fantastic people over quality food. On other evenings we just went up to chat, I don’t think we have ever been this sociable before when on holiday, it really has a special vibe here. We hate big sites in bland fields with a club house, if you feel the same way and like smaller sites with nature all around, views and great hosts, go to Camping des Combes, you won’t be disappointed.
